I’ve covered stories that focus on mental health, transportation, business, climate change, education, race and equity, politics and more. I’ve used several methods to report these stories, including data, investigation, public records and engagement. My work has appeared in The Seattle Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and The New York Times. Here are a few of those stories.

Mental HEALTH
I have connected people toward mental health resources and tips, provided expertly-sourced advice for caregivers and teens to talk about mental health, and examined the broken system preventing people from getting care. I’ve written about the ethical quandary of determining whether restricting someone’s personal freedom for mental health concerns is in their best interest and how to care for people with mental illness inside state prisons. I’ve explained what to know about helping someone experiencing a crisis and explored a promising, but underutilized resource in the mental health workforce. I’ve spotlighted a mental health crisis among farmers, farm workers and rural communities and how people process grief.
I’ve spent time examining the insurance industry and why, despite parity legislation, people struggle to get coverage for mental health treatment. That story was coupled with a resource guide to navigate the system.
TRANSPORTATION
I have held transportation agencies accountable for failing to meet service standards and harming riders with disabilities; I have explored promising solutions for cities to improve traffic conditions, implement projects faster and prevent potential traffic crashes; and I have broken news about executive decisions, policy choices and investigations. I have centered a focus on safety, the impact on communities and equity.
I have explored ride-hailing companies and their price increases for readers — digging through corporate spin to identify causes and impacts for the consumer. I’ve written about the intersection of business and politics when companies challenge new laws or face allegations of worker mistreatment. I’ve covered workers’ concerns and how the companies and state officials have responded. I have highlighted industry trends like skyrocketing demand for bikes during the pandemic, told through the experiences of local bike shops. I’ve tallied the ballooning price tag for major projects and potential cost-saving measures. I’ve analyzed why wealthy, venture capital-backed businesses failed. And, during the pandemic, I’ve documented the rise of remote work and how gig workers fell through the cracks of government aid programs.
BUSINESS
I have covered protests for workers, women, racial justice and gun control. I’ve written fast-turn profiles on leaders with local roots and individuals who handled crises. I’ve followed the aftermath of deadly crashes and interviewed friends and family members to learn more about an individual who was killed to help humanize a breaking news story. I’ve even written about the air quality during wildfire season.
Breaking News
I have chronicled how students, parents and teachers were preparing for a new school year during the coronavirus pandemic, and I followed hour-by-hour updates of students returning to school in-person after lockdown.
Education
I’ve written about allowing guns on college campuses, controversial public figures and hand-wringing over complex community issues; I’ve analyzed political trends, public attitudes, candidate debates, and policy proposals.
POLITICS
I’ve poured through thousands of data points to paint a picture of bike trends and worked with an expert to conduct a survey and report on public attitude. I’ve sifted through numbers and lots of words and sentiments.
DATA
I’ve tracked down expertly-sourced answers to popular reader questions about whether it’s possible to speed up light-rail construction and rules about license plates. I’ve gathered together anecdotes from readers about their experiences telecommuting and living outside the city limits and provided them space and a platform to sound off on big news stories. I’ve provided background and context for major historical events through curated and reported timelines.
ENGAGEMENT
REPORTING
I have conceptualized, organized and hosted several live events including how to improve access to mental health care in rural areas, how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis, what to know about kids living in emergency rooms, and how to get access to mental health care. I also created a printable guide for what to know about helping someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis that was distributed across the community.
